Three main fields comprise our research and educational pursuits. First, basic psychologyexamines the functions of intelligence and emotion, and their evolution and development in adults, infants and non-human animals. Second, experimental psychology analyses cognitive functions such as memory and perception, and how they develop over the lifespan using precise experimental methods and brain imaging techniques. Th ird, basic behavioural sciencediscerns the mechanisms underlying behaviours by investigating their neural functions and constructing models. Together, these interrelated fi elds off er students the opportunity to gain both broad and specialised knowledge in these core areas of psychology. After completing our programs, students pursue careers in research and education, as well as a variety of other sectors including, but not limited to; broadcasting, journalism, publishing, fi nance and manufacturing.Department of Psychology staff belong to the Kyoto University Psychological Science Unit, which off ers cross-departmental educational and research programmes.32Some scenes of psychological experiments with adult, infant, monkeys and cat participants.DEPARTMENT OFPSYCHOLIGY
