The principles and goals of this new department are described below. In the modern age, the increasing speed, scope, inexpensiveness, as well as the popularization and globalization of contemporary media is remarkable, and culture and information are transmitted widely and spread instantaneously. As a result, new cultures, values, and lifestyles are being produced beyond national and geographic boundaries. At the same time, new political and cultural confl icts have arisen over social norms and historical consciousness as traditional cultures, nation states, and systems continue to exist. In this department we examine the various problems unique to contemporary cultural phenomena and media. A remarkable characteristic of the research and education in our department is the fact that in order to deal with modern culture and media, we aggressively adopt methods and points of view unemployed previously in the humanities as well as ones from other disciplines while remaining firmly based in the traditional methodologies of the humanities and social sciences. For this reason, in this department we have developed courses in Studies on Popular Culture and Digital Humanities in addition to History, Philosophy, Sociology, and Literature.Research themes in this department are varied, including representations of gender, visual culture, fashion, and video games. We seek students with the spirit to pioneer their own methodologies suited to their own research topic.Seminar III poster session. All the junior students present oneʼs plans for the thesis, and senior, graduate students, and professors comment on their plans for improvements. Each session lasts about 15 minutes, and presenters could get comments in several rounds.37DEPARTMENT OFMEDIA AND CULTURE STUDIES
