A Joint Degree is an academic degree awarded jointly by two or more universities to a student completing a single educational program off ered in partnership by the universities. Students in this English-language Joint Degree Division study for two years —one each in Japan and Germany—and submit a master’s thesis in English leading to the award of a Master of Arts degree certifi cate in the name of both institutions, Kyoto University and Heidelberg University. Transcultural Studies is a trans-disciplinary, trans-regional research perspective informed by the idea that “cultures” are not contained within ethnically closed, linguistically homogenous and territorially bounded spheres, but are rather constituted through transformations and entanglements across national borders as various human activities, concepts, and institutions come into contact and form relations with one another. This concept presents a challenge to the pre-existing, fi xed order of academic disciplines. The Joint Degree Division aims to cultivate individuals equipped with the capacity to express themselves in academic English, conduct cross-disciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences, and make their mark in the global arena with a fi rst-hand appreciation of diversity in Asia and Europe. The Division’s students spend one year at each university, selecting one study focus among “Knowledge, Belief and Religion (KBR)”, “Society, Economy and Governance (SEG)”, and “Visual, Media and Material Culture (VMC)”. After earning at least 30 credits overall (minimum of 15 at Kyoto University and minimum of 10 at Heidelberg University; the remaining 5 can be earned at either university), they complete their master’s thesis under the joint supervision of faculty members from both universities.39DIVISION OFKYOTO UNIVERSITY AND HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY JOINT DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS PROGRAM IN TRANSCULTURAL STUDIES
