Faculty MembersThis office deals with international relations at the Graduate School of Letters and Faculty of Letters. It administers programs that promote internal relations and cooperation in research The Library of the Graduate School and Faculty of Letters (originally the Library of the College of Letters, Kyoto Imperial University) has a more than century-long history. It possesses over 1.1 million volumes in total, growing annually by 10,000 titles. All undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members, are welcome to go into the stacks and consult any item since it is the faculty’s policy that immediate access to original resources is essential for education and research. Th e reading room has study tables for up to 99 people, while collections are stored in the stacks on levels 1 and 2 of the basement. Th ese collections are classifi ed and arranged by departments into about 30 categories, each with its own classifi cation system. Some 10,000 rare books are stored separately in special stacks. Th e library has also 30 “special collections” bearing the name of their donors, primarily former professors at the faculty. The total number of these volumes is about 82,000, among them are the collections of the philosopher Kitarō Nishida We off er specialized support for international students at the Graduate School / Faculty of Letters regarding their research and studies, often in cooperation with their supervisors and other staff. We strive to ensure that all international students enjoy their stay in Japan and that their transition to a new environment goes as smoothly as possible. Any matters relatedto research and studies can be discussed with a member of our specialized staff by appointment.and education with overseas universities and institutions, including the exchange of students and teaching staffs. It also supports the studies and lives of both inbound and outbound students.and painter Kunitarō Suda. The library lends any item in its collections, including those from special collections, with the exception of rare books or fragile and damaged books which are for in-house use only. Undergraduate students can borrow up to 25 and graduate students up to 40 items for a maximum period of two months at a time.
