Huckster Scholarship: Vernacular Media and the Culture of Knowledge in Late-Ming China
SUMMARY: Borrowing a notion of the vernacular as a secondary universal language, with an associated cluster of new forms and expressive media, that was able to articulate a new set of historical and social realities, this talk explores “vernacularization” as a process that unfolds in texts, pictures, or performances, produced in late-Ming commercial books, whereby traditional material is adapted to new media and modes of presentation so as to provide early modern readers and audiences with a language to articulate the disruptions and explosive energies of their own social world. The talk argues that this practice, sometimes dismissively referred to as “huckster scholarship” (baifan zhixue 稗販之學) profoundly reshaped how the act of knowing was envisioned as both an epistemological gesture and cultural impulse in late-Ming China.

ご講演では、明代日用類書に収録されている「諸夷門」あるいは「外夷雑誌」、また、それらの情報源とされる『臝蟲録』も取り上げられる予定です。（これらの書では、多くの異国だけでなく、『山海経』由来のさまざまな人間の形をしたものの国々についても絵入りで紹介されています）一般庶民も含めた中国の人々が、どのように異域や異界にいる他者についての認識を形成したか、また、そうした自他の認識にどのように“huckster scholarship”（稗販之學）が関わったかについても、お話しいただけると期待しています。興味を持たれた方は、ぜひご参加ください。
